ZoneAlarm Pro 5 Firewall + Privacy Protection review:
2 stars (Watch out for the version 6 upgrade!!) - Hey, I've used ZoneAlarm for years and agree that it's a fairly good firewall for the money. However, watch out for the latest version (version 6)!! It hosed my computer. It forgot all the settings I've had on it for the past five or so years. Every application on my computer that accesses the internet is no longer working including Internet Explorer and my email. They added this new feature Smart Defense that doesn't seem too smart so far. They also changed all your program permissions to Block. You have to physically go in and change them back to Ask just to get it to prompt you for access to the internet. Then they amazing broke the Remember this Setting option so it prompts you again and again. Anyway, you get the picture and I can sleep knowing you have been warned. The latest upgrade is terrible.
4 stars (excellant product-alarm zone) - technical support is almost non-existent, because of this i will look to another product. this is unacceptible.
5 stars (The Easiest, The Best!) - I'm just buying this great firewall, right now on their trial. I've used others, but for me (technically challenged, on high speed internet for the first time) this rocks. Easy to configure even for an oldie like me, no need for constant popup alerts, runs silently, doesn't hog resources.



The final test to me was an independent testing site called Shields UP! which will test out your firewall in a number of different ways - https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 Even they say that ZoneAlarm is the only firewall that will "harden" to the NetBIOS which means nothing there is exposed to hackers and is very uncommon for Windows networked-based PCs to have. My Ports all tested as perfect "TruStealth" - no packets, no pings, including Port 113.
